STUDENTS:
Have you written a research paper on Turkmenistan?

Friends of Turkmenistan is seeking academic papers relevant to Turkmenistan or to the Turkmen people.  A $350 prize will be awarded to the best paper whose findings further Turkmenistan’s national development or greater understanding of Turkmen culture abroad.

ELIGIBILITY:  To be considered, entries must have been completed while the entrant was enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a college or university in the US or abroad.  Undergraduate, masters’ or doctoral level students (or recent graduates submitting work completed while still a student) in any field/ discipline are eligible to apply.  Entries should reflect original research and/or substantive intellectual contributions to knowledge and understanding of Central Asian issues.

Entries that have been submitted for academic publication and/or presented at academic meetings are welcome.  The author/ copyright holder should be prepared to allow the work (or an abstract) to be posted on the FoT web site.

FORMAT:  Papers must be submitted in English.  A variety of formats are acceptable, including papers prepared for submission to academic journals, masters’ theses, and research posters prepared for academic conferences (in single document format, such as .ppt or. pdf).  Papers will be preferably no longer than 50-60 pages, double-spaced.

SELECTION CRITERIA:  A selection committee will review entries anonymously and make a selection based on the following criteria.  For this reason, author name and contact information should appear on the title page only, and not elsewhere in the document.

Entries will be judged on their relevance to Turkmenistan or to issues related to Central Asian peoples, including majority and minority ethnic groups residing in these countries.  In particular, the selection committee will consider each entry’s with particular relevance to Turkmenistan, or to the Turkmen people, and the degree to which its findings may further Turkmenistan’s national development, or greater understanding of Turkmen culture abroad.  Selection criteria will include: content, originality, quality of research methods and/or analyses employed, ethical use of methods, and quality of writing and/or presentation.

If faculty members/ non-students are authors, papers for which the student is a first author will be given priority.
